Designed by Chicago architects Perkins, Wheeler and Will, was built in 1938 by Adlai Stevenson and his wife, Ellen Borden. In 1969, most of the property was sold to Edison Dick, a longtime friend of Stevenson. In 1974, the Dick family donated the estate to the Lake County Forest Preserves. The estate is a designated Illinois Historic Site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Interpretive signs placed along self-guided trails provide historical information about the site. The peaceful setting allows visitors to experience the historic landscape similar to how it appeared when Stevenson lived here.

A scenic destination, this stately preserve offers a variety of opportunities to recreate in nature. Fort Sheridan is one of only a few places in Lake County that offer free public access to Lake Michigan and an awe-inspiring lake overlook perched on a 70-foot-high bluff. Known for its pristine natural areas and excellent bird watching, Fort Sheridan is home to several rare species not found elsewhere in the region. The preserve’s savanna, ravines and lakefront location allow visitors to observe one of North America’s busiest flyways for migratory birds. At least 236 species of birds have been seen here.
